Why Oak?

Ever since the age of the first metal tools, oak has been in widespread use as a popular building material. Oak is especially valued for it’s strength, durability and availability, it dominated building construction since Saxon times right up until the late medieval period. Some fine examples of oak construction still survive over a thousand years later, for example St Andrews Church in Greensted, Essex.

The energy used in converting wood products is far lower than any competitive materials, such as concrete or steel, with wood itself being recyclable. Here at Carvalo, we make it our job to look after the environment by only using high quality graded oak, sourced from sustainable forests throughout Europe. This is evident from our certification in PEFC and FSC Chain of Custody.
